Srinivas Centenary Conference, organised by the Institute for Social and Economic Change,Bengaluru on 29–30 August 2017. Several of the issues raised in this paper are to be traced to the very insightful discussions with the doctoral students at ISEC in the classrooms or outside it. In particular,I should like to make a mention of V. Gayathri,Sathyapriya Raut,Sudha Seetharaman and R. Santhosh. Thanks are due also to the past directors of ISEC—G. K. Kadekodi,N. Jayaram,R. S.
